Touch Life: iPhone App for Second Life

touch life_title

touch life iphone (Text taken from http://nwn.blogs.com)

Touch Life is the name of an iPhone app for Second Life interaction which just went live in the App Store, and while I like Sparkle, the iPhone Second Life/OpenSim app from Japan, it’s pretty bare bones. (I just use Sparkle for short chat sessions and processing L$ payments.) This new app, by contrast, promises some pretty robust features: a dynamic world map, inventory, and most exciting to me, a feature where you can upload iPhone photos directly into your Second Life account. (Think of all the cool mixed reality possibilities that function will enable!) I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, but Radar Masukami has a detailed, illustrated review of the beta version, and he’s pretty excited. As with any third party Second Life app, caveat emptor, but Apple’s approval process has a good reputation for weeding out dubious apps (and a bad reputation for taking forever.)

Full details can be found HERE and also HERE .

If you try it out, report what you think in Comments! And be sure to share your feedback in-world with Edward Magic or Robot Core, SL names of the app’s developers. Image credit: pocketmetaverse.com

Have fun ㋡

[3:18]  angee McAndrews: i will stick to playing bejewelled on it

Well…..if anyone has tried and wants to leave a comment, feel free to let others know if it’s “crap” as anGEE says or not lol

SL Inventory Backup

As we all know, creating our own scripts and objects and clothing on Second Life can be fun and sometimes very time consuming. But are all those creations actually safe in our inventory?

The SL’s Asset Server is not absolutely reliable and often loses irremediably the hours of your work or the expensive objects that you bought. The Inventory isn’t the ideal place to save your objects!

So I am always on the lookout for a cheap way to backup my own Inventory creations. Of course there are a number of options available. One of which is the Emerald Viewer which can export your Inv to your hard drive and is what I use regularly. A full list of Emerald features can be found HERE. If you haven’t moved to Emerald Viewer, I suggest you at least give it a try. You may never want to go back to the normal SL viewer again :)

Other options include various releases by dedicated SL users. Probably the best known is Second Inventory by Angelo Biondi. It’s not the cheapest, with a single avatar version costing 5999l$ on XStreetSL. . I would say backing up all your own creations to hard drive on your PC for this price is well worth the cost. Especially considering all the features and options available.

Finally, there is another FREE option!  Second Life My Inventory Viewer – SLMIV. Although it has some nice backup options, I notice the object backup was unavailable! However, for the ability to quickly backup other items from your inventory, this is actually not a bad tool to have.

Of course there are other in world options available, but personally I don’t see the point! I’d rather have my creations safe on my hard drive. However, if you feel an in world backup is what you need, then check out some of the packages available from PM Sands on XStreetSL where you can find a real cheap option called Inventory Backup Storage Home Edition currently at only 150l$.

inventory backupSo what are you waiting for? Keep your Inv safe from LL asset issues. And you will be glad you did. After all, how many times have you heard other AV’s say they have lost Inv items? Next time, it might be you!!!

SLim Client

The new SLim client for Second Life is now available. So what is it? Basically it’s the Second Life Instant Messenger. i.e. SLim. Get it? Clever name huh?

So yes it is now possible to chat to your online friends who are on either Second Life them self or indeed if they are on SLim. Of course, this means you do not need to log into SL anymore in order just to catch up with your friends online.

And Yes it supports Voice :)

Kbext_slim-friends It does have its bugs tho. Sometimes showing friends as Online when they ain’t. And for now, it won’t allow Group chat. I am sure that shall come in time.

"SLim" is the Second Life® lightweight chat client. Cleverly named for its design, SLim offers a compact option for communication with your Second Life friends.

Enables Residents like you to interact with their Second Life friends without having to go inworld with the Second Life Viewer.

  • Only offers one-to-one text and voice chat.
  • Is in beta and may have occasional bugs.
Technorati Tags: ,,,
  • Currently doesn’t support:
  • Spatial voice (as if you were inworld in Local Chat)
  • Group text chat
  • Group voice chat

It’s something handy to have around if you are indeed on low internet speed and don’t want to use up all your bandwidth with the SL Client Viewers. Apart from that, there’s not much more I can say about it.

Full details and download can be found on the SL Wiki. Check it out for yourself :)
